About the Role

We are seeking a Junior Researcher in Animal Linguistics to join our interdisciplinary team remotely. This role focuses on studying interactions between animals and humans, particularly dairy cows, through ethnographic fieldwork. As a Junior Researcher, you will analyze multimodal interactions within specific social contexts, contributing to the ethical and scientific debate on human-animal relationships.

What You'll Do

  • Coordinate the research project closely with a team of PhD students, postdocs, and senior researchers.
  • Manage and enrich audiovisual data including video, audio, and photographs.
  • Code and transcribe relevant fragments of data for analysis.
  • Update and maintain a searchable database for the project.
  • Organize two national and international workshops with the research team.
  • Maintain network contacts with advisory councils and a broad audience.
  • Co-author at least one academic article if desired.

Requirements

  • A research master's degree or currently pursuing one in linguistics, with a demonstrable affinity for human-animal interaction or interdisciplinary research.
  • Experience or interest in annotation and analysis tools such as CLAN, ELAN, Praat, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti.
  • Experience in transcribing audiovisual data, particularly conversation analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with research methodologies in linguistics.
  • Previous experience in organizing workshops or conferences.
  • Interest in animal behavior and ethology.

What We Offer

  • Employment at the NL-Lab of the Meertens/Huygens Institute in the heart of Amsterdam.
  • Contract for a maximum of 0.7 FTE for 10 months at scale 8.0 (maximum €2367.40 per month).

  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to increase vacation days from 29 to 41 days per year.
