PhD Researcher in Climate-Related Health Impacts on Children - Remote
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated PhD Researcher in Climate-Related Health Impacts on Children to join our team at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. This remote position focuses on understanding the health risks posed by climate change to children in one of the most climate-sensitive regions of the world. As a PhD researcher, you will contribute significantly to the EU-funded CLIMES project, aiming to enhance the attribution and forecasting of climate-related health risks.
What You'll Do
- Conduct research on the health impacts of climate variability and change on children, utilizing advanced earth system modeling.
- Analyze epidemiological data to quantify exposure-response relationships specific to children in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Collaborate with a network of early-stage researchers studying various aspects of extreme weather impacts.
- Participate in training activities and research exchanges to enhance your career prospects in academia and the private sector.
- Work under the supervision of Prof. Wim Thiery and engage in international secondments at WASCAL in Ghana and ISGLOBAL in Spain.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Climate Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Hydrology, Physics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Strong interest in climate sciences and human health.
- Experience with large datasets and quantitative analysis skills.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Matlab.
- Good command of written and spoken English.
- Ability to communicate scientific results effectively to colleagues and the public.
- Creative problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.
Nice to Have
- Experience in environmental epidemiology.
- Familiarity with climate modeling tools.
- Previous research experience in international settings.
