About the Role

We are seeking an Early Career Media Tribology Design Engineer to join our dynamic team at Western Digital. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent Ph.D. graduate to work remotely and contribute to enhancing the reliability of head-media interfaces. As a Media Tribology Design Engineer, you will engage in critical research and development activities that impact our product designs and performance.

What You'll Do

  • Investigate the thermal, optical, mechanical, and magnetic properties of media interfaces.
  • Set up evaluation systems to assess media surface properties and tribology performance.
  • Collaborate with lube design engineers and COC design engineers to enable new product designs, including ePMR and HAMR technologies.
  • Work closely with the HDD tribology integration team to qualify tribological designs.
  • Provide analytical support to understand and resolve failures in media interfaces.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Ph.D. in material science, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge or experience in tribology, interface design, tribology testing, and material analysis.
  • Familiarity with head/media interfaces and ePMR and HAMR technologies.
  • Strong data analytics and statistical skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a positive, solutions-oriented attitude.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a research or development environment.
  • Familiarity with advanced materials and their applications in tribology.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices in media design.
