Senior System Engineer - ELK/​Kafka Remote Position

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior System Engineer with expertise in ELK and Kafka to join our remote team. In this role, you will manage and maintain the ELK/Kafka stack for log ingestion and searching, ensuring high availability and scalability. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the technological success of our clients while working remotely.

What You'll Do

• Manage and maintain the ELK/Kafka stack, ensuring optimal performance and tuning of topics, shards, indices, and retention.
• Proactively monitor capacity and performance, analyzing monthly reports to prevent incidents.
• Participate in incident management (ITIL V3), troubleshooting, and service restoration in case of ingestion gaps or backlog.
• Optimize Logstash pipelines, Grok patterns, and parsing flows; reprocess failed events and reduce failures.
• Handle patching, end-of-life management, and security fixes according to the Security team's guidelines.
• Contribute to testing and delivery, updating technical documentation and run books (ticketing via JIRA).
• Manage dashboards and metrics (e.g., Grafana, Elastic/Kibana) for environments with approximately 500 messages per second.
• Support migrations and platform changes (e.g., OS lifecycle, provisioning with Terraform, configuration management with Ansible/AWX).

Requirements

• Experience managing large-scale ELK ecosystems, including Kafka/Zookeeper, Logstash, and Elasticsearch (cluster sizing, shard/replica strategies, ILM).
• Linux administration (Ubuntu, CentOS/RHEL, Debian) in HA environments; knowledge of Windows Server 2012–2019.
• Strong troubleshooting skills for ingestion gaps and post-outage recovery; methodical approach to unknown problem resolution.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code: Ansible (roles, inventory, AWX) and Terraform; versioning with GitLab.
• Experience with observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Kibana) for metrics and reporting.
• Ability to collaborate with Security, Compliance, and application stakeholders in regulated environments.
