Senior Software Engineer for Applied AI - Remote Opportunity
About the Role
Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Applied AI to join our Modeling & Tool Development team. This position offers the opportunity to work remotely while contributing to innovative projects that integrate AI/ML capabilities into production systems. As a Senior Software Engineer for Applied AI, you will leverage your expertise in software architecture and machine learning to solve complex problems that advance INL's mission in energy and national security.
What You'll Do
- Lead the architecture and design of complex software systems incorporating AI/ML models.
- Plan, develop, and implement software engineering solutions across multiple technology stacks.
- Design and build production systems for deploying AI/ML models, including APIs and data pipelines.
- Apply software engineering principles to develop scalable solutions using Python, C++, C#, and TypeScript.
- Work with relational databases (SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Neo4J) to design robust data architectures.
- Support research initiatives by evaluating emerging AI/ML technologies.
- Collaborate with project teams to establish scope, cost, and schedule estimates.
- Participate in technical reviews and provide expert recommendations on architecture and technology selection.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- 9+ years of relevant experience for Level 4 or 14+ years for Level 5.
- Strong foundation in software engineering principles and design patterns.
- Proficiency in Python and at least two of C++, C#, TypeScript/JavaScript.
- Experience with AI/ML models in production environments.
- Experience with RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
- Ability to lead technical projects and mentor engineers.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance.
Nice to Have
- Experience architecting scalable systems in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Hands-on experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
- Experience with .NET ecosystem and modern frontend technologies.
- Knowledge of MLOps practices and model deployment strategies.
- Familiarity with large language models and emerging AI technologies.
