Senior Cloud Engineer - Observability for Bayer
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer - Observability to join Bayer's innovative team. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will play a critical role in advancing our mission of 'Health for all, Hunger for none' by leveraging your expertise in cloud technologies and observability practices. This is a unique opportunity to work remotely and make a significant impact in the field of digital farming.
What You'll Do
- Be the hands-on Subject Matter Expert (SME) for our observability toolchain, including Datadog, CloudWatch, and OpenSearch.
- Run office hours and produce exemplars to help teams implement effective instrumentation and alerting.
- Triage and resolve observability-related platform requests with clear ownership and measurable outcomes.
- Establish and operationalize Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for key platform components.
- Maintain opinionated 'golden paths' for logging, metrics, tracing, and dashboards to enhance observability.
- Drive reliability reviews and partner with delivery teams to turn recurring incidents into durable fixes.
- Embed observability checks into CI/CD workflows to ensure seamless integration with our development processes.
- Define and report platform observability KPIs to measure and improve our observability practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with AWS, operating production workloads.
- Deep practical experience with observability tools such as Datadog and CloudWatch.
- Strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform; CloudFormation is a plus).
- Experience in programming for automation/tooling using Python, Go, or similar languages.
- Solid understanding of cloud architecture, networking, and security fundamentals.
Nice to Have
- Experience productizing observability enablement and creating templates and standards.
- Familiarity with CI/CD at scale, including GitLab pipelines.
- Knowledge of logging/telemetry platforms beyond CloudWatch/Datadog.
- Experience with container platforms like ECS/EKS and AWS data services.
- Relevant AWS certifications.
