Senior Backend Engineer (Python) - AI-Powered Industrial Platform

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Python) remote to help build an AI-powered “co-intelligence” platform for industrial manufacturing. Our product combines data analytics, time-series data, and agentic AI systems to guide engineers and operators in reducing wasted energy and carbon emissions.

This is not a traditional backend role. You’ll play a key role in designing AI-native backend systems, where LLMs and agentic workflows are a first-class architectural concern, not just an API integration. You’ll collaborate closely with AI engineers, data engineers, infrastructure, and frontend teams, owning features end-to-end from early prototypes to production systems.

What You Will Do

• Design, build, and operate Python-based backend services and APIs for AI-driven web applications.
• Architect complex business logic, state management, and workflow orchestration, including AI-powered decision flows.
• Design and integrate LLM-based and agentic systems, including agent workflows and orchestration, state and memory management, tool calling and retries, and evaluation, reliability, and failure handling.
• Integrate backend services with time-series data platforms and AI reasoning engines.
• Own the full feature lifecycle: design → development → testing → deployment → monitoring.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with AI, data, infra, and frontend teams in a fast-moving startup environment.
• Support customer pilots by developing custom data processing and AI-driven modules.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• 5+ years building backend systems with Python.
• Hands-on experience and strong intuition with LLM-based or agentic AI systems, gained through professional work and/or meaningful open-source contributions or personal projects.
• Demonstrated understanding of agent workflows, state, and memory, orchestration patterns, and tool calling.
• Proven experience building backend services with complex business logic (not just API wiring).
• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
• Solid computer science fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, design patterns).
• Experience building RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL services.
• Strong testing culture and experience with CI/CD pipelines.
• Comfortable working in early-stage, fast-paced environments with high ownership.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines.

Nice to Have

• Experience contributing to open-source projects.
• Experience building data-heavy backends for analytics or dashboards.
• Familiarity with Docker and cloud deployments (GCP preferred; AWS/Azure welcome).
• Experience with event-driven architectures or message queues (Pub/Sub, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Full-stack experience with React, Next.js, or TypeScript.
• Experience with observability, monitoring, and system reliability.
