Senior Backend Engineer - AI-Powered Solutions

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team at WorkHero, where you will play a pivotal role in building the AI-powered back office for the skilled trades. This Senior Backend Engineer remote position offers you the chance to work on innovative projects in the $50B+ HVAC industry, leveraging your expertise to enhance our backend and AI systems.

What You'll Do

• Develop and maintain backend systems and AI product infrastructure, including integrations and ingestion from third-party systems.
• Implement AI workflows in production, focusing on tool-using agents and classification/extraction processes.
• Conduct evaluations and monitoring, including regression tests for prompts and quality metrics.
• Design scalable systems that support rapid product iteration, including API design and data modeling.
• Ensure security and privacy through strong authentication controls and safe handling of sensitive data.
• Analyze requirements and propose innovative AI-native solutions to technical challenges.
• Write clean, scalable code and optimize the performance of our AI systems.
• Mentor team members and collaborate across teams, especially with product and subject matter experts.

Requirements

• 5+ years of senior-level backend experience with a proven track record of shipping production systems.
• Strong proficiency in a typed backend language, preferably TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with LLM-powered features and AI frameworks like Langchain.
• Ability to work with infrastructure as code (Terraform), cloud, and CI/CD systems.
• Deep understanding of modern web and AI stacks, including Cloud, databases, and APIs.
• Excitement to leverage AI coding tools for maximum efficiency.

Nice to Have

• Experience with audio streaming and AI voice features.
• Familiarity with workflow automation tools like n8n or Lindy.
• Experience in HVAC or back-office business workflows.
• Mobile development experience, especially with Expo and/or React Native.
• Specific experience with AWS and its key services.
