PhD Researcher in Environmental Engineering - Remote Opportunity
About the Role
We are excited to announce a PhD Researcher position in Environmental Engineering, focusing on real-time monitoring and modeling of wastewater treatment impacts on water quality in rivers. This remote opportunity allows you to contribute to vital research while working with the University of Stuttgart’s renowned Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management (ISWA).
What You'll Do
- Implement a monitoring scheme for water quality and flow in rivers upstream and downstream of wastewater treatment plants.
- Quantify the contribution of treated wastewater discharges to river pollution loads under varying meteorological conditions.
- Utilize real-time sensor measurements and targeted autosampling during weather events for detailed laboratory analysis.
- Apply machine-learning methods to anticipate the real-time impact of treatment plants on river water quality.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions for environmental protection.
Requirements
- A solid background in engineering or natural sciences.
- Strong interest in environmental protection and sustainability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Excellent management and communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills; familiarity with machine learning is a plus.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of German is desirable.
Nice to Have
- Experience with environmental monitoring technologies.
- Previous research experience in wastewater treatment or water quality assessment.
- Familiarity with data analysis and modeling software.
