About the Role

We are seeking a talented Backend Engineer - Blockchain Trading Infrastructure to join our innovative team at Kraken. This Backend Engineer remote position offers you the opportunity to work on cutting-edge blockchain technology and decentralized finance solutions. As part of our team, you will contribute to building a next-generation Ethereum Layer-2 network, enhancing the speed, security, and accessibility of decentralized finance.

What You'll Do

  • Design and implement core trading infrastructure components, including matching engines and risk management systems.
  • Build and maintain high-performance microservices in Rust that handle high-throughput trading operations.
  • Develop and optimize smart contracts in Solidity for perpetual and spot trading.
  • Work on blockchain integration layers, including transaction sequencing and EVM simulation.
  • Design database schemas and optimize query performance for PostgreSQL databases.
  • Implement monitoring and operational tooling to ensure maximum reliability for production trading systems.
  • Collaborate on system architecture decisions affecting performance and scalability.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building production backend systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Rust or the ability to quickly master systems programming languages.
  • Experience with async Rust and web frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, database design, and API design.
  • Experience with relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
  • Ability to identify bottlenecks and implement optimizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with blockchain technology and smart contracts.
  • Understanding of EVM internals and gas optimization.
  • Familiarity with order matching algorithms and trading infrastructure.
  • DevOps experience with Docker and AWS.
  • Contributions to open-source Rust or blockchain projects.
