About the Role

Defense Unicorns is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Fleet to join our dynamic team. This remote position allows you to collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and end users to ensure we’re building the right solutions—and building them well. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll operate at the intersection of product development and technical execution, leading the design, implementation, and deployment of features that directly impact mission outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Influence product direction through a deep understanding of user needs and system constraints.
  • Partner with Product and Design teams to clarify product requirements and translate them into actionable technical deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to design, build, and iterate on product features and bug fixes.
  • Engage in technical communities of practice to share knowledge, align on standards, and drive consistent engineering practices.
  • Integrate software products with existing defense systems, ensuring seamless interoperability and adherence to security protocols.
  • Develop comprehensive documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and maintenance guides.
  • Contribute to Open Source Projects, participating in CNCF, ASF, or OpenSSF.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to inform product enhancements and innovation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience building software tools with a focus on software lifecycle and management.
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language (Golang preferred).
  • Strong understanding of system design, APIs, and databases.
  • Ability to assess complex problems, propose pragmatic solutions, and drive them to completion.
  • Familiarity with Core Kubernetes Concepts including Controllers, Operators, and CRDs.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud environments (AWS/GCP and Azure).
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Pulumi.
  • Experience with Continuous Delivery and automation tooling.
