Engineering Technologist - Steam Power Systems
About the Role
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an early-career Engineering Technologist to support the operation, maintenance, and improvement of our steam and power generation and distribution systems. This Engineering Technologist remote position is ideal for candidates who enjoy working closely with equipment, collaborating with engineers and operators, and developing deep technical expertise in utility-scale systems.
What You'll Do
- Support day-to-day system reliability, preventive maintenance, and capital improvement projects for LANL's energy systems.
- Split your time between field activities and technical work, providing a well-rounded, hands-on career path.
- Gain exposure to large steam boilers, condensate return systems, and a 20+ MW combustion turbine generator.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for assigned steam and power systems with guidance from senior staff.
- Help resolve operational and maintenance issues using established engineering standards and procedures.
- Perform frequent field walk-downs to observe maintenance activities and system performance.
- Support preventive maintenance programs by reviewing procedures and checklists.
- Apply applicable codes and standards (ASME, NFPA, EPA, LANL standards) to real-world systems.
Requirements
- Experience or strong interest in utility-scale steam or power systems.
- Familiarity with boilers, turbines, rotating equipment, or water treatment systems.
- Exposure to instrumentation, controls, or SCADA/OT systems.
- Comfort working in both office and field environments.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related degree.
- 5 years of directly related experience for Engineering Technologist 2 or 8 years for Engineering Technologist 3.
Nice to Have
- Experience in utility operations or maintenance environments.
- Interest in instrumentation, controls, and process optimization.
- Knowledge of DOE or regulated facility environments.
- EIT or Professional Engineering certification (supported but not required).
