Director of Legal - Remote Position at FirstPrinciples

About the Role

FirstPrinciples is seeking a Director of Legal - Remote to join our innovative team. This role is pivotal in shaping the legal function of our non-profit organization, which is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of the universe through AI-powered research. As the Director of Legal, you will support our Canadian foundation and US 501(c)(3) globally, working closely with executive leadership to develop governance frameworks that align with our mission.

What You'll Do

• Lead the establishment of the legal function at FirstPrinciples, ensuring compliance with Canadian and U.S. laws.
• Develop AI governance frameworks that support our technological innovations.
• Advise on intellectual property strategy and corporate governance for multiple entities.
• Structure and negotiate data acquisition agreements to facilitate our research initiatives.
• Manage legal frameworks for talent programs and provide strategic legal advice on AI and nonprofit law.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bridge the gap between legal requirements and scientific inquiry.
• Engage in meaningful legal work at the intersection of AI and research, contributing to the mission of advancing fundamental science.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent with active bar membership in Canada.
• 8+ years of relevant legal experience, particularly in commercial contracts and data licensing.
• Strong experience advising on AI regulatory frameworks and knowledge of Canadian and U.S. employment law.
• Experience with nonprofits and technology companies is a plus.
• Ability to operate independently and make judgment calls in a fast-paced environment.
• Clear communication style with non-lawyers, ensuring legal concepts are easily understood.
• Interest in physics, AI, or scientific research is highly desirable.
